“A musical institute is founded in Padua and it will be called musical school…”
These were the words at the beginning of the article 1 of the statute of the new musical school in Padua, founded in 1878 thanks to the support of the municipal and the province and with the collaboration of some members of “The society of new theatre”.
In 1901 the school changed its own social statute integrating the modifications approved in the previous years. The denomination became “Musical Institute of Padua”, the laws about the members were reorganized and for the first time there was the role of the director who “can be choosen among the teachers”. In truth this role had been existing since the first years of the school, as a matter of fact Cesare Pollini, when he was very young he had been director from 1882 to 1884.
It is known that Pollini decided that Oreste Ravanello (1871- 1938) could become director after him; they were close friends and there was a strong esteem between them. After Ravanello, it was the turn of Gian Francesco Malipiero to become director , he was one of the best italian composers at that time. He was succeeded by Arrigo Pedrollo, an excellent composer who had been director until 1958 when the direction was given to Wolfango Dalla Vecchia.
In the first seventies there were some events of big importance for the musical institute: the location moved from Carlo Leoni street to Eremitani street, the institute “C.Pollini” was nationalised so its denomination was National Conservatory of Music and Claudio Scimone became director.
Looking to the historical aspect, the year 1999 was a very important year for all the italian musical education because of the approval of the reform law concerning the conservatories which had been waited for 70 years. The reform established that the conservatory diploma was equivalent to a degree.
The conservatory of Padua, which became “Institute of high artistic and musical formation”, realized many activities of production and it was present in the territory working with the city institutions and with the foundation “Cassa di Risparmio” in very prestigious projects. Moreover it established agreements with the university “Ca’ Foscari”, the foundation “G.Cini” of Venice and the university of Padua (medical school for a master in music therapy).
